A huge flat plateau with forest, parallel to Matheran. In fact Prabal was to be
developed as a hill station, but for the shortage of water. It can be seen from
Matheran and all the nearby forts. Travelling on the main road from Chowk to Panvel,
get down at Poinje village phata, 6km before Chowk.
From te road Poinje is 2km. Climb up a small spur to the middle plateau. The
Irshal-Prabal ridge runs northwest to southeast. From the plateau move north
along the base of the wall. Climb up the southeast gully of Prabal on the right.
This is the gully on the traverse. The route takes one through a dilapidated fort
wall. A lake, a water tank (on extreme southern end) and a huge, thickly forested
plateau on the top.
Another route approaches Prabal from its northern end. From Panvel take a bus to
Shedung, Belavli. Proceed to Vardoli(6km) and go up the fort by the same route.
From the middle plateau a connecting ridge leads to Irshal, or one can also proceed
across an old landslide, descend through the valley to village Varosa(6km). From Varosa,
one can walk to Chowk(6km) or climb to Matheran via the Shivaji Ladder(10km).
